When you're in Siem Reap...

stay

Hotel de la Paix

Sivatha Boulevard
Siem Reap

If you are looking for the ultimate luxe hotel to rest your weary bones after climbing through the temples, Hotel de la Paix should be your first stop. Uber-chic and very cool, this art deco hotel could compete with the likes of luxury hotels in major cities throughout the world. Extremely tranquil as its name suggests, many rooms have private terraces, huge soaking tubs and garden bathtubs. Be sure to check out the gorgeous pool!

Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor

From the moment you roll up the white gravel driveway, and enter the beautiful old lobby complete with whizzing ceiling fans and the old iron-cage elevator, you know you are staying in pure colonial elegance. Request a room in the landmark section to really complete the colonial experience, but all rooms are beautifully appointed and the top notch service is there to meet your every need. Breakfast was a treat we looked forward to every morning as well as a dip in the huge pool after a full day of exploring the temples. Start your evenings off right with cocktails in the beautifully maintained and oh-so-colonial Elephant bar.

Meric

Hotel de la Paix
Sivatha Boulevard
Siem Reap
Cambodia
+855 63 966 000
Whether or not you are staying in Hotel de la Paix, you must make your way to Meric at least one evening. World renowned chef, Paul Hutt, seeks out very fresh and unusual ingredients and introduces diners to unique Cambodian flavours they will not find elsewhere. This is true Cambodian fine dining served in a sleek and swanky environment. We recommend pre-dinner cocktails outside on one of the posh swinging beds (they even provide mosquito repellent) and then moving indoors to do some serious dining.

While the hotels and restaurants have come a long way in the last few years, you are not coming to Cambodia to get a massage or sit by the pool. You are here to see the temples, and what an amazing experience it is. To make that experience even better we highly recommend using Exotissimo to set you up with one of their English-speaking guides and drivers (Trust us, one of us did not use them and thoroughly regretted the guide she got!). You'll see the sunsets and sunrises at just the right spots and learn more about these feats of humanity than the average visitor. If Mr. Long is still around we highly recommend him!

While the food is very tasty, you are less there to eat as much as you are to soak up the ambience, get tipsy on one of their lethal cocktails, and curl up in Lin Biao's old arm chair when they aren't looking. Located in one of Beijing's famous and all too quickly disappearing Hutongs (little alleyways choc full of history), make sure that your hotel has written explicit directions in Chinese and the cab driver fully understands. So you are in Tokyo, and you obviously need to eat some sushi . . . you'd better eat the best. Known by locals and expats as the absolute top sushi restaurant in Tokyo, Kyubei, will absolutely blow you away. The freshest and best sushi is served and prepared for you by some of Tokyo's master sushi chefs. You don't really order off a menu, they just serve and entertain you, and after a few bottles of sake you all speak the same language. You may not be able to send the kids to college after a meal here, but for melt in your mouth sushi it's almost worth it. Because this place is so expensive, we feel we need to warn you again. Just hand them your credit card, look away, and feign ignorance at exchange rates when you get your statement.

One of our absolute favourite meals in Tokyo. The city is choc full of great restaurants and we are making a point to return to this place so that should tell you something. The food style is teppan yaki, so make a ressie to sit in front of the chef. Amazing Italian specialties, beautifully married to Japanese style, and fantastic wine. Like the rest of Tokyo, this ain't cheap, but every morsel of the meal was divine and totally worth it. Another fine point if you have trouble finding it, (or when you get there if don't know what to order) they have English speaking staff.

Everyone must go to the Fish Market in Tokyo at least once. We recommend staying up all night and hitting the ground running at 4:30am. Be careful of the trolleys whizzing by and note that a pair of rain boots may be appropriate attire (and not your new Louboutains). Venture in as deep as you can. Although being immersed in all that freshly slain poisson may not whet your appetite, we urge you to seek out one of the surrounding little restaurants and have an early breakfast of the freshest sushi in the world. Locals as well as tourists venture there in the wee hours.
