If it’s not one thing…it’s your Mother!

Even though she’s embarrassed you, lectured you and sent a search party looking for you while you partied till dawn, she’s always been your biggest fan.  Who else would listen for hours while you mumbled on about the trivialities of your love life, or tell you exactly how dire you looked when you were convinced that leg warmers, balloon skirts and blue eye-shadow were the greatest fashion breakthroughs of all time? It’s time to say thank-you to mom…

Bonne Maman – Enjoy a languid morning at home with maman feasting on croissants (The Mandarin Cake Shop, Connaught Road Central, 2825 4008) and watching Paris Je t’aime, a collection of 20 different short films based on the “city of love” (HMV, 1/F Central Building, 1-3 Pedder St, 2739 0268).  Then make your way over to Caprice for a decadent 4-course Mother’s Day luncheon ($680pp, Four Seasons, 8 Finance Street, 3196 8888).  During your post lunch IFC shopping, don’t forget to stop for café au lait and macarons at Le Goûter Bernardaud, ($130/box, Shop 2028, IFC Mall, 2295 3955).  In the evening, surprise her with tickets to Nouvelle Vague, the super-hip band in town for one night only on May 13 as a part of Le French May (HKCEC, http://www.hkticketing.com, 2264 1025). C’est parfait!

Mamma Mia – Her tummy is the way to her heart! Let mom hang up her apron this Sunday and head to Ceconni’s Cantina (43 Elgin Street, SoHo, 2147 5500), the recently opened outpost of Melbourne’s renowned Italian restaurant. Or visit Grissini (Grand Hyatt, 1 Harbour Road, 2584 7933), where two-Michelin starred Chef Valentino Marcattilii will be taking over the kitchen with his signature home-style Italian fare, just like mama used to make (or better!).  As a gift, pick up some Truffle Infused Olive Oil from Il Bel Paese ($120, 95 Caine Road, 2549 8893) or a wedge of 24 month-aged Parmiggiano Reggiano, the “cheese of the month” at Classified (108 Hollywood Road, Central, 2525 3454). That’s amore!

Hot Mama – Take the day’s leading lady for a 4-course lunch at Azure (33 Wyndham Street, 3518 9330) before heading to Harvey Nichol’s (Landmark, Central, 3695 3388) where Mom can receive a free tea set for two with a purchase over $5000. We recommend choosing a few pieces of Calamansi Bijoux jewellery to add a touch of sparkly glam to her already rockin’ wardrobe. In the early evening, sip the coolest cocktails in town at Opia (Jia Hotel, 1-5 Irving Street, Causeway Bay, 3196 9000) before whisking her off on a sunset helicopter ride (Heliexpress, 2108 9899) to view the city from the ultimate vantage point.   For dinner, spoil your dazzling gem at the InterContinental Hong Kong (18 Salisbury Road, TST, 2313 2323) where mothers dining at NOBU (lunch $558; dinner $988), SPOON (lunch $558; dinner $988), Yan Toh Heen (lunch $488; dinner $888+) or The Steak House (lunch $528 adult/$298 child; dinner $838) will receive a special gift of Mikimoto Pearls. That should satisfy Little Miss Chic!

Mother Earth – Skip breakfast in bed this year and start your Mother’s Day morning with a delicious organic buffet on the patio of Plateau Spa, (Grand Hyatt, 1 Harbour Road, 2584 7688), a delectable hideaway that’s one of the best kept secrets in Hong Kong.  After you’re finished feasting, present your Mother Nature with a piece of John Hardy jewellery, hand crafted by local artisans in Bali, now selling at a 50-70% reduction in a private sale this weekend only (Thurs-Sun, Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Suite 926, 9768 4366). Then treat her to locally grown produce and unique products created by Hong Kong entrepreneurs at the open-air Borrett Road Market (10am – 5pm, Borrett Road, Mid-levels).  For dinner, book the candle-lit roof terrace at Life Café (10 Shelley Street, SoHo, 2810 9777). Going green has never been so glamorous!

Mama without an Amah – She’s in serious need of some R & R! Restore mom’s youthful glow with a Caviar Cell Vitale Facial (1 hour 10 min, $1,200) or a Mother Daughter Spa Indulgence ( 2 hours 30 min, $2,400), both specially created for Mother’s Day at I-Spa (InterContinental, 2721 1211). Or book her a decadent two-hour Four Seasons Mother’s Day Treat ($2500, 8 Finance Street, Central, 3196 8888) including a lotus milk bath, a face and neck massage using rose quartz crystals, and a take home candle bearing her initial.  Plateau Spa (Grand Hyatt, 1 Harbour Road, 2584 7688) is celebrating Mother’s Day with special discounts for mom throughout the month of May. Book a 90-minute Massage and receive a complimentary Floral Brightening Body Scrub or choose any Facial and receive a 25-minute Back Massage. If mom’s schedule won’t permit treatment time, let her spa at home with one of two Mother’s Day gift sets, available from I-Spa (2721 1211), the Lavender Dreams Home Spa Collection ($920) or Neroli Facial Collection ($900), which can be delivered directly to her home or office. Peace at last!

Whether you’re a well-seasoned mama, a mother-to-be or a great mom in the making, there’s no reason you can’t start celebrating.

Happy Mother’s Day!
