I (He)art Hong Kong

The first time you were in a room together, the world shifted, the stars collided and you knew your life would never be the same again. During your next few rendezvous, the magic was undeniable. And when you finally went back to your place, it was clear you had found the one. . . Nothing compares to falling in love with your first piece of art. And whether it’s a modern Chinese piece from an emerging cutting edge painter, a breathtaking scene from a world class British photographer or an avant-garde 1970s Warhol, the upcoming ART HK 10 Hong Kong International Art Fair is sure to hold something that will take your breath away. . .

Starting May 26th, artists, collectors, gallery owners and art lovers from around the world will set the city alight with their vibrant energy as ART HK 10 kicks off this year’s highly anticipated 4-day art fair at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Now in it’s 3rd year, ART HK 10 has become a standout fixture on the international art calendar and will welcome the strongest line up of exhibitors and events ever to be seen in Asia including more than 150 galleries from 29 countries worldwide. Key international power players include White Cube of London, Emmanuel Perrotin of Paris, Lehmann Maupin of New York, and Hauser & Wirth of Zurich, London and New York. Highlights among the Asian galleries include ShanghART of Shanghai, Hanart TZ Gallery of Hong Kong, ShugoArts of Tokyo, Kukje Gallery of Seoul, Eslite Gallery of Taipei and Long March Space of Beijing.

Always want to be on the cutting edge? An ART FUTURES section of the fair will welcome exciting young galleries less than five years old, to showcase the work of emerging artists and provide a unique opportunity for us to experience the latest developments in the art world. Looking for something totally unique? Check out solo presentations from a number of the world’s most respected Contemporary artists, including Chinese artist Liu Ye for Sperone Westwater, Japanese artists Yoshitomo Nara for Marianne Boesky and Aya Takano for Emmanuel Perrotin, and the acclaimed Glasgow artist Jim Lambie for The Modern Institute. Looking to start or add to your own personal collection? Guided tours will be running throughout the fair to help you learn more about the various pieces to suit all budgets starting from HK$8000 to HK$80m.

Hot tickets on this year’s program include the VIP opening night Vernissage on Wednesday, May 26th and the Late View Party on Thursday, May 27th, benefitting Aids Concern and featuring live fashion shows, DJs, hip hop dance performances, body-painters and more. A series of ‘Backroom Conversations’ talks, organised by Asia Art Archive, will feature visiting experts from the MoMA and Guggenheim in New York and the MoCA in Tokyo. And possibly the most thought-provoking and highly charged event of the fair will be a debate on Friday, May 28th at 6:30pm organized by Intelligence Squared Asia, during which the controversial motion: “You Don’t Need Great Skill to be a Great Artist,” will be argued by Antony Gormley, British artist and 1994 winner of the Turner Prize, Tim Marlow, art historian and director of exhibitions at White Cube gallery. Hans Ulrich Obrist, critic and co-director of exhibitions at the Serpentine Gallery, London, and Sarah Thornton, sociologist and bestselling author of Seven Days in the Art World. Moderated by Deborah Kan of Reuters Insider and voted on by the entire audience after the closing remarks, this promises to be a packed house and a not to be missed event. (Tickets: HK$300, available through HK Ticketing).
