Hot Off The Press

Wanted: Bright, bustling brasserie with excellent food and well-trained service. Must have menu that includes great wines, bistro classics and comfort-food favorites. All dishes made from fresh ingredients only. Dedicated cheese and wine shop next door, a plus. Stiff, formal restaurants need not apply.

While many a suitor has replied to our ad, only one was fit to print: The Press Room. Located in the site occupied by the Hua Qiao Daily newspaper in the 1920s, the restaurant captures the fin de siécle glamour previously found only in brasseries in New York or London. The first of its kind in Hong Kong, The Press Room serves up classic, hearty bistro fare in a casual, laid-back environment. Subway tiles, chalkboard menus and café tables set the scene for meetings of the minds, whether it be a press conference, an intimate one-on-one, or a recklessly long lunch when the publisher’s out of town. Menu items that are making headlines are: Fresh Oysters from the Crustacea Bar, Five Onion Soup Gratinée, Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon and Black Caviar, and classic Steak Frites. To ease writer’s block, sip on the signature White Peach Bellini or cure-all Bloody Mary.

Looking for a scoop? The Press Room plans to start serving breakfast daily in March. So, whether you’re on the a.m. beat or graveyard shift you can get your fill of mouth-watering treats (which is more than we can say for the news room!).

Got a deadline to meet and need more than the usual filler? Grab your press pass and pop next door to Classified, a specialty cheese and wine shop, which also stocks gourmet goodies such as preserves, teas and olive oils. Home to the only cheese ageing room in all of Asia, where cheese is kept in a temperature and humidity controlled environment, Classified takes its fromage seriously. Professional and amateur reporters alike are invited to sample from the 20 different types of cheese before making a purchase. To complement your award-winning Colston Bassett Stilton (our favorite!), investigate Classified’s wines and charcuterie. Wines are sourced from all over the world and have a range in prices to satisfy all budgets, from the copy boy to the Editor-in-Chief, while the Iberian hams are imported from renowned Spanish label Joselito. Have a midnight deadline? Get your caffeine fix with a cup of Graffeo coffee, dubbed “the best in the world” by Classified’s staff (we concur!). Hands on research required for your piece? Classified offers private cheese and wine tastings so you can really learn your chevre and Chablis. And, with a visiting “cheese specialist” from London in house for the next few months, you can get the final word for your hard line Q & A.

No need to quote “off the record.” This is newsworthy food.
