Global Gourmand

Has the global financial meltdown been keeping you up at night?  Remember, there’s more to life than unwinding your carry trades and redeeming from your hedge funds…it’s time to focus on food, a commodity that never lets you down. The city is brimming with international gourmet promotions that will take you on a tour of the global markets (the culinary kind!).

Singapore Sling
Where: Coffee Mill, Lower Lobby, Gateway Hotel, Harbour City (2113 7926)
What: In conjunction with the Singapore Tourism Board, Singapore Airlines and the Pan Pacific Hotel, Singapore, the Coffee Mill at the Gateway Hotel is hosting the Singapore Food Festival celebrating the diverse and palate pleasing cuisine of Singapore.  Enjoy local delights including Hainanese Chicken Rice, Chilli Crab and Black Pepper Crab, Bak Kut Teh, Char Kway Teow and Rojak. Test out your Singaporean knowledge in their weekly quiz competitions. If you’re lucky you could win a round-trip ticket to explore the cuisine first hand. Now that’s something to sing about!
Why: You can’t say no to the legendary Chilli Crab.

Middle Eastern Delight
Where: Café Rendezvous, InterContinental Grand Stanford (2731 2860)
What: Guest chefs from InterContinental The Regency, Bahrain, bring you a culinary tour to the mystical, exotic world of the Middle East by presenting a buffet of delicate, spicy, aromatic and syrupy Middle Eastern cuisine at Café Rendezvous. The showcase includes Spicy Fish Mouhamara, Tabouleh, Falafel, Manakesh Arayes, Iranian Mixed Kebabs, and Shish Kebabs. Or try their desserts with secret recipes Eish el Seriya, Mouhalabia or Kataif, and much more.  Très sheikh!
Why: You’ve bought the cookbooks but the ingredients alone would take a day and a half to find, let someone else prepare the banquet!

Malaysian Sensation
Where: Café Too, Island Shangri-La (2877 3838)
What: In celebration of Tourism Malaysia’s “Visit Malaysia Year,” the Island Shangri-La Café Too is hosting an array of classic Malaysian specialties. Indulge in local favourites including Rendang (aromatic spiced dish of tenderly simmered meat), Soto Ayam (clear chicken soup with vermicelli and vegetables), and Popiah (stuffed crepe with stewed vegetables).  A selection of authentic desserts will also be available at the sumptuous lunch buffet.  Malaysia Truly Asia?  We can confirm, its food is Truly Amazing!
Why: Instead of perching on tiny plastic chairs in hot and humid hawker stalls, enjoy your authentic curries in the splendor of the Shangri-La!

Italian Affaire
Where: DiVino, 73 Wyndham Street (2167 8883)
What: Indulge in Sardinian delights, bursting with character and flavour with this specially designed menu, straight from the heart of Italy.  Try signature favourites including Spaghetti with Bottarga Roe, Garlic and Parsley in Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Roasted Sardinian Baby Pork flavored with Fresh Mirto Leaves and Wild Sardinian Sea Bass Fillet served with Baby Artichokes and Vermentino Wine Sauce. Pronto andiamo!
Why: As if you ever need a reason when it comes to Italians!

Spanish Inquisition
Where: MO Bar, Landmark Mandarin Oriental (2132 0188)
What: Enjoy the passion, colour and flavours of Spain with the ‘Taste of Spain’ promotion at MO Bar.  Feast on savoury Spanish seafood, tapas, Iberico ham, an array of Spanish cheeses, and dessert specialties such as crema catalana. There are mouth-watering lunch set menus to delight in, as well as complimentary tapas during happy hour and a selection of premium wines from Spain. MO Bar, maravilloso!
Why: After a few of those glasses of wine, it’ll feel more like a romantic hacienda with trickling fountains and cascading bougainvillea rather than Queen’s Road Central!

Now, on a full stomach, futures are suddenly looking up…
