Chocoholics Anonymous

At night, you dream of it and wake up licking your lips in anticipation. You’ve hidden it in secret spots all over the flat in preparation for those insatiable cravings. And when you try to go without it, you get the shakes. There’s no way around it, you have a serious addiction…to chocolate! And as any addict worth her weight in grams knows, a little bit of the good stuff is better than gallons of the watered down version. To help you through this dire time, we’ve scooped, drizzled and tasted our way through Hong Kong (put on a few kilos, but anything for you!) and created our own regime, guaranteed to make you feel better than any 12-step program out there…

Step 1: La Maison du Chocolat
(Shop 246, Pacific Place, Admiralty, 2522 2010)
Not quite a house made of chocolate but almost as good! Known the world over for its rich yet delicate flavours, this legendary French chocolatier has finally opened its doors in Hong Kong. For a special summer treat, try their Habanera Ganache, a subtle blend of dark chocolate perfumed with vine peaches and a milk chocolate with mirabelle plums.

Step 2: Grand Hyatt
(1 Harbour Road, Hong Kong, 2588 1234)
I scream, you scream we all scream for ice scream! Tiffin at The Grand Hyatt has added a variety of delectable ice cream treats to their ever-popular evening dessert buffet this summer. Specialties such as Swiss Roll Hazelnut Ice Cream Cake, Rhubarb and Peach Champagne Sherbet and Vanilla Ice Cream Sandwiches will be available until August 31.

Step 3: Agnes b. Delices
(Shop 11A, Fashion Walk, Peterson Street, Causeway Bay, 2577 0338)
First clothing stores, then flower shops and galleries, then restaurants and now a dedicated sweet shop, that Agnes b. is one busy lady! Agnes b. Delices presents designer chocolates in line with the effortlessly cool lifestyle brand emblazoned with fun messages like “b. yourself”. Try the Peach and Champagne Truffle for an effervescent treat or the decadent Chocolate Truffle Cake, which is too good to be missed.

Step 4: berrygood
(Shop A, G/F, 41-43 Graham Street, Central, 2543 8393)
The celebs love it, now’s your chance to give it a try. berrygood presents uniquely delicious and healthy frozen yogurt with fresh fruit toppings, which has a striking similarity to LA’s famed Pinkberry. You’re probably just a few scoops away from getting Jennifer Aniston’s body!

Step 5: PETiTS by Deschamps
(Shop 2004, Elements, 1 Austin Road West, Kowloon, 2882 7477)
There are cupcakes and then there are PETiTS cupcakes. With ultra creamy icing and a surprising filling on the inside, these are some of the most irresistible sweet treats in town. Favourite flavours include mint, chocolate truffle and cherry. But we are warning you, unless you want to be crossing the harbour on a daily basis, try them at your own risk!

Step 6: Mandarin Oriental
(5 Connaught Road, Central, 2522 0111)
Who needs retail therapy when you can have some good old-fashioned Chocolate Therapy? Created by the Mandarin Oriental’s Executive Pastry Chef Yves Matthey and Executive Chef, Uwe Opocensky, Chocolate Therapy will be available in 40 unique flavours including rosemary, verbena, cardamom and violet. The range, which took 6 months and almost one ton of chocolate to perfect, will be available exclusively at The Mandarin Cake Shop beginning 19 September. It’s time to book your next session!

Like any addict in recovery, we’ve achieved the first step and admitted that we have a problem. The only major problem left now is…we have no desire to be cured! Bon Chocolat…
