Changing Gears

Hit UK TV Show Top Gear is set to descend on Hong Kong this weekend, bringing with it breathtaking stunts, amazing special effects, blockbuster driving sequences and non-stop thrilling action. But if all this high-octane excitement leaves you feeling a little woozy and looking worse for wear, it may be time to change gears. Ease into the passenger seat, slip into a peaceful zen state of mind and join us for a totally serene and super smooth ride that will leave you feeling unbelievably refreshed and revitalised. It’s time to take this town’s new spa treatments out for a test drive. . .

Eve Lom
“Less is more” is not a philosophy we usually abide by, except if the person saying it is renowned beauty guru Eve Lom. Her highly sought after facial treatment, whose A-List fan club includes Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna, is making its debut in Asia at the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, starting March 1. The facial begins with a thorough cleansing using the famous Eve Lom Cleanser, which has been heralded by Vogue as “probably the best cleanser in the world,” followed by a paraffin wax mask to open the pores and make for easier extractions. After this comes a soothing 30-minute lymphatic drainage and an acupressure massage of the arms, back, face and full chest to encourage decongestion. After the massage, Eve Lom’s other cult favourite product, the camphor-based Rescue Mask is applied, then removed with a hot chamomile- soaked muslin cloth. To finish the treatment, an ice-cold compress is used to refresh the skin and close the pores. If you are as impressed with this uncomplicated skincare system as we were, you’ll be tempted to clear out your beauty cabinets and pick up a simple Eve Lom Cleanser and Rescue Mask of your own to continue this pared-down facial regime at home. Hey, if it’s good enough for Madonna, who are we to argue? (90 min, HK$1500, Mandarin Oriental Spa, 2825 4888)

QT: Quality Time
You’re a busy bee and time is not something you have oodles of at the moment. Does that affect how wonderfully dazzling you look? Not in the slightest! With the help of miracle working facials such as Quality Time at the Landmark Mandarin’s Oriental Spa, you can fast track yourself to maximum gorgeousness in minimum time. Using the renowned Som product line, this results-driven, vitamin infusion facial boosts and renews tired and lacklustre skin, leaving your face with a sparkling, long-lastng glow. In just 45 minutes you’ll be beaming so much you’ll look like you’ve spent the past month living on the Elixir of Life in a top-notch health retreat! (45-min, Mon-Fri HK$ 900, Sat-Sun HK$1,000, Landmark Oriental Spa, 2132 0011)

Balinese Lulur
Last spring Ku De Ta in Bali was practically your second home, but this year, your travel diary is so packed that you (gasp!) might not have time to make it to your favourite island at all. Not to worry, the Four Seasons Hong Kong is bringing Bali to you with renowned therapists from both the Four Seasons Bali, Sayan and Jimbaran Bay in residence at the The Spa until March 1, performing indigenous treatments that are instantly transporting. For a full Indonesian beauty ritual experience, try the Balinese Lulur body treatment, which begins with an invigorating green tea exfoliation scrub, followed by a moisturising warm yogurt wrap and a soothing ylang-ylang petal bath and finishes with a relaxing Balinese massage using mountain flower body lotion. After body and mind have been rejuvenated, a specially created jamu herbal elixir is served to complete the ritual. Even a day on the beach wouldn’t leave your skin this glowing! (120 min, HK$1,900, The Spa at Four Seasons, 3196 8900)

Spring Detox
How could you possibly start your spring cleaning at home without doing your skin the same favour? The Landmark Mandarin Oriental Spa has just the treatment to wipe away the sins of your overindulgent holiday eating and drinking (which somehow has continued through February!?). Their Spring Detox program includes 90-minutes of swim time in the hotel’s 18m indoor pool, where you can get your circulation going and muscles moving by kicking, paddling and backstroking the afternoon away. After your dip, indulge in a cellulite-reducing massage (much more fun than the gym!) followed by a detoxifying body wrap with pink grapefruit, juniper and rosemary essential oils. A final detox cleansing juice and a plate of fresh berries will leave you revived and ready for anything. . . maybe even re-organizing your closets! (90-min + 90-min pool time, Mon-Fri HK$ 1,500, Sat-Sun HK$1,550, Landmark Oriental Spa, 2132 0011)

Cruise on down to the spa, we know these new treatments will have your wheels spinning!
