Catwalk Talk

As warm summer breezes (or in our case typhoon gale force winds) begin to lead into the crisp cool(er) days of autumn, style takes the spotlight on the world stage and fashion mavens around the globe wait in breathless anticipation of the designs that will shape the coming year. From the tents of New York, to the runways of Paris, Fall Fashion Week is an all consuming, all encompassing frenzy of style, stilettos and seething critiques. Next week, for the third year running, Hong Kong joins in the worldwide exhilaration with MasterCard Luxury Week, a series of unique shows featuring the Fall/Winter 2009 Collections, which are in stores now, so you can pick your favourites from the runways and go straight out and do what Hong Kongers do best. . . shop! Next week, every style-lover worthy of her Louboutins will be talking in fashion tongues. So, whether or not you plan to attend, you better brush up on your designer speak. Here’s our cheat sheet for some editor-worthy catwalk talk. . .

The Show: Shanghai Tang
The Talk: Hong Kong’s very own Shanghai Tang will open Luxury Week with a blast of colours and decorative prints that merge old world tailoring with modern designs. Their “Kaleidoscope” Autumn/Winter 2009 Collection takes inspiration from the traditional Peranakan (Straits Chinese) style of elaborately adorned garments. Classic blouses are modernly illustrated with an underwater garden and hand drawn Batik inspired flowers are uniquely shown on a stunning trench coat. In contrast a “Bauhaus” print inspired by art deco and cubism will be presented on a traditional qipao, adorned in head to toe sequins. (Monday, August 24, 7:30pm)

The Show: Escada
The Talk: Escada’s designer Damiano Biella has taken inspiration from fiery Greek Opera soprano, Marie Callas, to create a line that mixes strong femininity with modern movement. Coats featuring the must-have sharp shoulders of the season and capes of patterned knit are paired with skinny cropped trousers. Patterns feature strong colours alongside soft neutrals such as bougainvillea with slate grey, as well as strongly magnified animal prints to create a bold edge. Elaborate detailing makes for stunning evening pieces from flirty dresses to show stopping gowns in liquid velvets and luscious satin chiffons. (Tuesday, August 25, 6:00pm)

The Show: Kate Spade
The Talk: Kate Spade New York will present their first ever apparel collection comprised of classic favourites in rich colours with a touch of flirtatious charm that will work for every occasion – perfect cocktail dresses, chic cardigans and fabulous coats that complement their much adored accessories line. Standout pieces from the uber-feminine Bisous collection include the sparkling Deborah coat in pink and grey glittering tweed and the Gail dress, a mod shift created from scalloped lace. One of our favourite looks from the new collection (shown above) is entitled “Dim Sum After Dark“! (Thursday, August 27, 3:00pm)

The Show: Diane von Furstenberg
The Talk: One of the world’s most stylish global nomads, Diane von Furstenberg presents a Fall 2009 line inspired by travels and nature. Mongolian patterns on a cloak, highland plaid over iridescent gold tweed, aboriginal patterns in felt and origami braided into a mini skirt is just the start of this glorious collection. Cosy comfort takes center stage with luxuriously soft sweater capes, body hugging cashmere pants and mohair cocoon coats while eveningwear goes exotic with rich purples, sparkling shifts and entrancing short skirts with feather embellishments. (Thursday, August 27, 9:00pm)

The Show: Thakoon
The Talk: Featured in the highly acclaimed new fashion documentary “The September Issue” and worn by Michelle Obama during the US Presidential nomination acceptance speech, Thai-American designer, Thakoon Panichgul, is now one of the hottest names on every style-lover’s lips. His Fall/Winter 2009/10 collection is colourful and energetic with a focus on surrealism that can be seen in the prints, the construction of the garments and the subtle manipulation of the fabrics. (Friday, August 28, 9:00pm)
