There are certain times when having an alibi is crucial. Oversleeping brunch with your boyfriend’s visiting parents, or waking up in a strange flat with 40 missed calls, or showing up to your work offsite with a very new and very visible tattoo. But we have one place where you won’t need any excuses… Alibi – Wine Dine Be Social is the city’s newest happening watering hole at Langham Place, offering Spanish snacks courtesy of an ex-22 Ships maestro, swanky spacious digs, seriously good interpretations of classic cocktails, and (you say it and we’ll swear to it!) the best G & T’s in town.
Take the elevator up to the 5th floor, enter a rustic urban lounge complete with copper lighting and cosy fireplaces and prepare to be swept off your feet by young mixologist Leo Cheung‘s superb handcrafted cocktails. Order up one of the aforementioned dangerously delicious yet shockingly strong G & T’s made with Martin Miller’s gin, tonic, orange bitters, dried juniper berries, lime, and rose petal, and you may actually fall back into the cosy couches where more cocktails are sure to follow. Crowd favourites include “The Alibi,” a mixture of Talisker Whisky, Pimm’s no. 1, Sloe Gin, Drambuie and Montenegro bitters, “Alibi’s Sakura,” with vanilla and peach vodkas, Sakura liqueur and freshly squeezed grapefruit and lemon juice, and “Lonely Holiday,” a twist on a classic combining Islay Whisky, Calvados, sweet Vermouth, Drambuie and orange bitters, served with a stick of lemongrass incense.
You don’t want the night to end before it begins so it’s time to start feasting. And Chef Tim Bruges, formerly of Otto e Mezzo and 22 Ships, has just the menu you’re looking for. We recommend an order of Manchego and Bomba Rice Fritters, Truffle Cheese Toastie or Kimchi Toastie Sandwiches and the Bruschetta, Lardo di Colonnata topped with rucola, honey, thyme and truffle to complement your next round.
Still hungry? The Braised Wagyu Bone Marrow, served with crostini and fig and whiskey chutney will have your taste buds humming, while the Gambas served picante with an aromatic salad using local greens and crispy garlic will bring you back to the ramblas of Barcelona. Taking you distinctly back to Hong Kong is an Asian variation on chocolate fondant with Steamed Chocolate Cake wrapped in lotus leaf, drizzled with mocha caramel, and served in a traditional Chinese dim sum basket. You had us at chocolate fondant!
