The Big Speakeasy

Can you keep a secret? Yes? Okay, we’re going to let you in on something really juicy…

A gentrification similar to that of Brooklyn in the early 2000s is happening in Hong Kong today in Kennedy Town, endearingly referred to as K-Town. So, what makes K-Town so special? Merely a few years ago, this part of the city was largely residential, with few dining options, and local dive bars. Fast forward to 2014, and you will find many of Hong Kong’s social mavens fluttering over to Kennedy Town, boasting about the newest, coolest, restaurant you simply have to check out.

The hotspot in question is Missy Ho’s on K-Town’s restaurant-lined Forbes Street, where restaurant giant Castelo Concepts has shed its clean cut, straight edged image (think Jaspas & Oolaa) and adopted a darker, funkier vibe. A non-descript single metal door acts as the entrance to this speakeasy-esque restaurant where high jinx and naughtiness are guaranteed. Expect swings, bartop dancers and a box full of fancy dress outfits, plus scrumptious sushi whipped up by ex-Sushi O chef, Persi, to feed the fun.

We started with a light cucumber and radish salad, before tucking into vegetable tempura, miso cod tacos, and salmon and mango ceviche. Fusion-inspired sushi rolls, like the punchy wasabi-filled spicy salmon roll and the uniquely paired chicken and avocado roll were a surprising taste sensation. The signature wagyu sliders ended the meal on a hearty note.

We finished the night rather unconventionally with Missy Ho’s version of a digestif – which we will let you discover yourselves when you head down there… But let us advise you to do that soon – as a place this good won’t stay secret for too long!
