The Big Five Oh!

When you think Hong Kong, you think Mandarin Oriental, and this year even more so as the hotel celebrates 50 FANtastic years in our favourite city. Last week, the Mandarin commemorated its Golden Anniversary with a celeb-studded bash and an incredible 3D film projected over the façade of the property that lit up the night sky. Today, on the very day the gleaming doors opened 5 decades ago, we raise a glass and journey to 1963 and back, as the glittering golden celebrations continue…

GOLDEN-ERA COCKTAILS
For a cocktail that’s been 50 years in the making, head to the Captain’s Bar this Friday or Saturday night. Alessandro Palazzi, Head Barman at London’s Dukes Bar – where the original James Bond “shaken, not stirred” martini was inspired – will be in residence shaking up the classics, as well as a series of exclusive Mandarin martinis, which he created to launch the hotel’s 50th Anniversary Silver Martini Glasses and Tankards.

GILDED FEAST
For a once in a half century kind of experience, try Mandarin’s celebrated Executive Chef Uwe Opocensky’s 10 or 14-course tasting menu of 1963 Dishes with a 21st-Century Twist, served exclusively in the spectacularly intimate 12-seat Krug Room. Or head to Pierre where the famed chef is bypassing gold in favour of diamonds – of the culinary variety – with 5-courses of white truffles, which can be ordered a la carte or as a set menu that will send your tastebuds into a wild celebration.

GLITTERING DECADENCE
To inspire The Mandarin Spa’s indulgent golden spa treatments, they’ve gone all the way back to the year 50 BC, a time when Cleopatra was said to have slept in a gold mask to enhance her beauty. You can now have this divine experience yourself with the 2-hour Golden Utopia Facial, which uses a new line of anti-ageing products by Gaylia Kristensen including a brilliant 24-carat gold natural collagen mask (HK$2,400 + 10%). The Mandarin Spa has also released a 90-minute Golden Sparkling Body Treatment, which starts with a full body exfoliation using a golden body scrub, followed by a soothing massage using a Golden Shine Massage oil, leaving the skin smooth, hydrated and glistening with radiance (HKD1,600 + 10%).
