Is This Love?

Bringing a dose of Caribbean cool to the streets of Hong Kong, Rummin’ Tings officially opened its doors with a (steel drum) bang this fall. With this laid back beach bar plucked straight out of the tropics, the guys behind saucy Southeast Asian eatery Fatty Crab experiment with a whole other exotic coastline. Reggae tunes hang loose in the air and potent cocktails ensure a hurricane of a night to follow…

Light bulbs are strung up across the ceiling while modern fluorescent signs, wall graffiti, and retro patterns borrowed from surfers bring you back to a beachside bar in Montego Bay. There are very few tables here, save for a few round tops in the bar area and one large table at the back – encouraging pitchers of rum punch and stories to be shared among the crowd.

Before Bob Marley has you swaying into oblivion, order up some the authentic Caribbean comfort food with recipes plucked from the best of the isles. Go straight to Jamaica for the “Jamrock Jerk Chicken” and authentically delicious “Jamaican Beef Patties” or “Rasta Veggie Patties” filled with spinach, okra, and tomatoes for the vegetarians in the party. Sail to the Bahamas for refreshing “Conch Salad” a mix of conch and tiger prawns served in a tall martini glass. Touch down in Aruba for finger licking good “Sticky Island Ribs” or go cruising for seafood favourites like the “Maracas Bake & Sole” and “Steamed Clams.”

Time for a few more cocktails? Unleash your inner pirate with a ‘Dark & Stormy’ made with Gosling Black Seal Rum, Lime, Ginger Syrup, and Fever Tree Ginger Beer. Or transport yourself to Havana with a ‘Coco Libre’ signature cocktail with rum, Chamarel coconut, and Coco water. If it’s simply rum you’re after, there is a whole section of the menu aptly named ‘Rhumerie’ which features more varieties than you ever knew existed.

Ready to start surfing the rum wave? On Thursday 12, Friday 13 and Saturday 14 February 2015, Rummin’ Tings will present their first “Caribbean Carnival” in Hong Kong with three consecutive nights of drinks, street food, live entertainment and island-inspired fun.

Is this love – is this love – is this love – is this love that you’re feelin’? Whether it’s the real thing or just a rum-induced affection, you may just have found your new favourite spot in town.
