Martini, Bellini, Panini, Tortellini… hearing these words automatically transports us to summer days of feasting on the shores of Italy. So when we heard about the latest “ini” in town, new Italian hotspot Gradini, we hoped we might be in for a treat. Luckily, this airy, bright and beautiful restaurant tucked away in The Pottinger Hotel did not disappoint…
Kick off your evening (or afternoon!) in the impeccably designed bar with a round of Bellinis made with fresh peaches, Champagne and Grappa, before moving into the dining room for a sumptuous feast created by celebrated Chef Giovanni Greggio, former Head Chef of Nicholini’s.
Not sure where on the sublime seasonal menu to start? Once you pull yourself away from the treasure-filled bread basket, we recommend easing into things with the ‘Grigliata de polpo con spinaci in balsamico e olio di olive’, grilled Mediterranean octopus with citrus salad on a bed of hand-picked baby spinach leaves, or the ‘Scaloppe di mare al pomodoro con insalata di rucola’, Seared king scallops with cherry tomato confit placed on arugula salad and aged balsamic vinaigrette, before tucking into the signature ‘Rigatoni Alla Norcina Piccanti’, pasta with Tuscan sausage in spicy tomato sauce topped with a generous sprinkling of parmesan cheese.
Ready for round two? The ‘Lombo di agnello in crosta al forno’, roast lamb rack with herbs and Chianti mustard or ‘Spigola Alle Erbe Al Forno’, salt-crusted whole Italian line-caught sea bass with fresh aromatic herbs should have you fully satiated and dreaming of the Mediterranean shores.
End the evening with a few spoonfuls of the classic tiramisu made with with layers of Savoiardi biscuit flavoured with espresso and Amaretto topped with mascarpone cream and cacao, and an espresso from their gorgeous copper Italian coffee machine.
After this indulgent feast, there’s only one similar word you definitely won’t want to hear for a while…Bikini!
