Happy Birthday Buddha

Dear Buddha,

Happy Birthday!  We hope that just for today, you get off your Lotus chair, leave the world to it’s own devices, and have a bit of fun.  Not sure how to celebrate? We can think of lots of ways to party in your honor…

Don’t feel like braving the crowds on your birthday? Let’s make our own pilgrimage up to the Peak Café (121 Peak Road, The Peak, 2849 1000) for their delectable brunch specials or we can go “veggie” with curries from the new all-you-can-eat menu at Jashan ($98, 1/F, Amber Lodge, 23 Hollywood Road, Central, 3105 5300), talk about Buddha-licious!

Instead of your usual birthday bath, let’s take a dip in the mystical water at the Island Shangri-La ($400, 2877 3838) or submerge in grand style at the Grand Hyatt ($350, 2588 1234). Luckily, your birthday falls on a Thursday, so we could even take the high road to the Landmark Mandarin Oriental for their “Weekday Escapade” package, which includes complimentary use of their indoor swimming pool and gorgeous spa facilities, plus an aromatherapy massage ($930, 2132 0188).  It sounds scent-sational!

Tonight, we can be enlightened at the Hong Kong Space Museum (Stanley Ho Space Theatre, 2721 0226), where Mystic India, a film documenting an 11-year old boy’s quest for spirituality is now playing. Or, catch our balance at Tao of the Heart, the Sri Shakti Academy’s Dance of Duality, in which east and west, traditional and contemporary converge in a combination of Indian dance and Spanish flamenco (Sheung Wan Civic Centre Theatre, 2734 9009).  Following the show, we can shake our “buddhas” all the way to Lotus (37-43 Pottinger St., Central, 2543 6290) for drinks and snacks from their recently updated summer menu.

Now for your birthday surprise…we’re taking you “on the bun” to this year’s Bun Festival on Cheung Chau.  We can ride the ferry from Central and arrive before midnight when the bun scrambling competition begins!  Once we get back into town, we’ll continue celebrating your namesake with outdoor drinks at hidden hot-spot Baby Buddha (18 Wo On Lane, Central, 2167 7244) and toast your birthday with a few more cocktails at the sultry Buddha Lounge (22 Hollywood Road, Central, 2526 2562), until we’ve all reached Nirvana!

Instead of material gifts, we’re giving you entrée into two volunteer/charity events next week. On Sunday, May 27, you can “dig deep” at Able Charity’s Tree Planting Day on Lamma (9488 4746).   And Thursday, May 31, you can do it  “doggy-style” at an A-List Fashion Show at Wasabisabi to raise funds for Hong Kong Dog Rescue ($500/pp, 6807 0276).  It’s Karma-riffic!

As you always say, “Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” So, no matter what you do today, kick back, relax and have a great time.  You can continue saving the world tomorrow!

Xoxo,
The Dim Sum Girls
